Work Classification Setup and/or Maintenance Errors in Certified Payroll Solution

These are error messages that you could encounter during your initial Work Classification Setup, found from the Basic Info menu -> Work Classifications OR from the Edit Work Class button, found in the Employee or Wage windows.

This Work Classification may not be deleted as employee xxxx is still in this classification.

Work Classifications may not be deleted as long as a wage or an employee is assigned to this classification.  If you really need to delete this classification, change the employee (Linked Data menu -> Employees) OR wages (Linked Data menu -> Wages) first.

Percentages must be in whole numbers.

The percentage must be 1 - 100, expressed in whole numbers.

Improper use of the "Defer to Employee" Federal EEOC Code option, combined with "For Wages, Defer to Employee's Worker Classification".

While not an error in its own right, improper use of these two options used in conjunction with each other or individually, produces incorrect Work Classifications to display on your final reports.  Improper use of these options will cause the software to "run in circles" looking for a Work Classification to use.

The purpose of the Work Classification "Defer to Employee", when the option, "For wages, defer to Employee's Worker Classification" is checked, is for companies that use a single QuickBooks Payroll Wage Item, such as; "Hourly Rate" (or something equally generic) to pay all employees.  This creates, a one-to-many relationship; one common payroll item used for many work classifications.

In such an instance, for each employee, from the CPS Linked Data menu -> Employees, the Work Classification assigned there should be the Work Classification that you wish to have appear on the final reports (Laborer, Equipment Operator, Truck Driver, etc.).  This also means that this employee will NEVER perform work under any other classification.

If you need to add a Work Classification that is not available in our standard list, for example: Bulldozer Operator, you can easily create a new Work Classification.

From the Basic Info menu -> Work Classifications, click the ADD button to create the new work classification.  Alternatively, Work Classifications can be added from the Employee or Wage window by clicking the EDIT WORK CLASSIFICATION button, and clicking the ADD button.
